A Brief Introduction to Human Communication

Being Human means Being-in-Relationship

1. The human being is not an isolated being but a being-in-relationship and communication is possible (and necessary..) because we always live--and die--in relationship.

1.1. One of the main obstacles in human communication is the (unconscious) belief that we are not beings-in-relation but individuals. We do not know our partners as somebody in relation to us but as somebody "there". Hence our tendency to blame (or praise) the other as somebody unrelated to us, and also our tendency to blame (or praise) ourselves as independent from others.

1 .2. Generally speaking it might be said that western thought tends to emphasize the human being as independent from others while eastern thought puts more emphasis on group relations. However, it must also be said that the western concept of PERSON (being-in-relationship) is similar, for example, to the japanese concept of NINGEN ("nin" meaning "human being") and GEN (meaning "between").

1.3. It follows that what is distinctive of the human being is not having an "I" but being a "We". To know oneself means to know oneself in relation to Nature, other people, and God.

1.4. Consequently to talk of "others" simultaneously means to talk of oneself since we can only talk of 110thers" as they relate to "myself" and my-self is, obviously, my-self-in-relation-to-the-other.

1.5. The "in-between" is the basis of Christianity. "The Kingdom of Heaven is between you" means that to we find or lose ourselves in relation to others.

1.6. It might be said that "human growth" (anthropological dimension) and "salvation" (theological dimension) point at the integration of human beings in the totality of what exists. Notice that we say 11integration" and not "loss" or "absorption".
